Hi Neighbors,

It’s time for a fall update. My, how time flies.

General Meeting: We have an important meeting coming up. Save Sunday, November 9, 2:00 p.m., on your schedules for a Shannon Ridge HOA General Meeting to be held at Turning Point church just inside Bentwood. We will be having elections for President, Vice President, Parliamentarian, and three Area Representatives. The only requirements are that the nominees and the voters are paid members, and there is one vote per property for each office. You can pay your yearly dues at the meeting, and you will be covered through 2009. The dues are only $50.00 per year.

If you are interested in running for an office please prepare an introduction in the form of a brief paragraph stating your plans for the community. This will allow the voters a chance to get to know you and assist them in making their choice quickly.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Annual Picnic: The Social Committee put on a great picnic this year in the new pavilion at the Floresville Park. We had some great food and a good time was had by all. There were approximately 40-45 attendees and a lot of great fellowship was shared.

Status of year 2007 vs. 2008

Deed Restriction Violations – In 2008 there were 21% fewer properties with violations than in 2007. Currently, there are less than 10% of the Shannon Ridge properties with open violations. This is great progress. Keep up the good work. Your neighbors appreciate it.

Treasury - In 2008 we raised the membership from 41 in 2007 to 50 in 2008. We began 2008 with only about 20 members. The entire board participated in a membership drive, which brought our numbers back in line with prior years.

The bank balance as of September 1, 2007, was $8,425, and the bank balance as of September 1, 2008, was $7,450. Our expanded publications of the newsletter and other mailings have been the largest expense. We are diligently trying to defray those costs by switching to an email friendly format and utilizing email wherever we can to communicate to our entire community and not just members.

Upcoming Plans: There are a group of volunteers that have taken on the beautification of the entrance to Shannon Ridge. They will be doing some drought-conscious landscaping around the entrance sign beginning in early October.

Also, we are contracting the entrance sign to be re-painted using reflective paint on the lettering. We would love to be able to make the sign visible in both directions on Highway 181, but the costs are prohibitive at this time. We have to be somewhat careful in what we do as the sign does sit on private property. Currently, the owner of the property has approved the landscaping design and the painting.

Neighborhood Watch: We, along with many Wilson County communities, experienced a rash of vandalism early this summer. It has since been a topic of concern. Some of our members are interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch. I’ve spoken with Sheriff Tackett, and he would support our efforts as his office is under resource constraints. The HOA will provide signage at the entrance and magnetic signs for the vehicles on patrol. Volunteers are needed. If you are interested in participating, please send a note via email to shannonridgehoa@yahoo.com or call Cherri Ruffilo at 830-393-8851 and we will answer any questions you may have. You do not have to be a member to participate.

Garden Club: Some community members have inquired about a Garden Club. This type of activity can be started by anyone and does not have to be associated with the HOA.

Welcome Committee: The Welcome Committee has visited more new residents. These families include the Felen’s, the Rodriguez’s, the Drzymala’s, the Ramos’s, the Smith’s, and Benefield’s.

The Welcome Committee depends on your referrals. If you have a new neighbor, please give us a call and let us know. We’d love to pay them a visit. The committee can be contacted by calling Cherri Ruffilo, Chairperson, at 830-393-8851 or via email at shannonridgehoa@yahoo.com .

Social Committee: I regret reporting that the committee chairperson of the Social Committee has resigned. However, the committee is still intact and in need of a leader. The planned Halloween event and the Christmas Light contest have been put on hold until a chairperson can be found. If you are interested in leading this great group of volunteers, please call Cherri Ruffilo at 830-393-8851or send a message via shannonridgehoa@yahoo.com.

Animal Tracks: The SNAP (translates Spay and Neuter Assistance Program) Clinic is available to your dogs and cats. The clinic is located at 6758 Ingram Road, San Antonio 78238. The phone number is 210-673-7722 and the hours are 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Monday through Friday. There may be a favorite veterinarian or animal hospital that you prefer to use to have your dogs and cats spayed and neutered. But if there isn’t, SNAP is a great place. The veterinarians are highly skilled, the staff is professional and caring, and the facility is as clean as any veterinarian facility I have seen and a lot better than some I have visited. There is one day a month dedicated for the spaying and neutering of dogs and one day for cats. You must make an appointment to take advantage of this day, and the day fills quickly, so call early the month prior for your appointment. You get an appointment for the date, but not the place in line to check in, so get there before the clinic opens at 7:30. The actual surgery check-in time is from 7:30 to 8:30 AM. I took my cats about 7:00 AM in July and I was fourth in line to check in. The check-in process was quick and easy. The animals do stay at the facility for the full day. This is for their protection. The veterinarians do follow-up on the surgery and make sure they are OK to be released. My cats did great. They were confined for a week, and I checked the incision during that week and all went well. The animals must be at least 4 months old before the surgery will be done and the cost for each animal is $40.00. That cost includes the surgery and rabies shot for each animal. I highly recommend the service to anyone in need of having dogs or cats spayed or neutered. It’s a good thing!!! The clinic also gratefully accepts charitable donations in the form of items such as towels, newspapers, paper toweling, hand soap, rubbing alcohol, laundry detergent, and office supplies. Hopefully this information will be of use to residents of Shannon Ridge. If you would like to see a specific topic on dogs or cats researched and published in Animal Tracks, please let me know and I’ll get it in a future publication. Thanks.
